5 Saturdays Multi-Media Explorations - (5 Sessions)
This series is an excellent one to invite friends to for 5 fun consecutive Saturdays of creative release! Open to ALL "levels" of experience in art-making. These classes are designed for absolute beginners who have always wanted to play, explore, create, make messes and have FUN, as well as more experienced artists who are wishing for a creative community with opportunities to enliven their work by emphasizing creative process over product. (Also, an opportunity for teachers to gain PDU credit hours while simultaneously gaining project ideas to share in the classroom).
We will use various media to create our own inspired art, sometimes drawing inspiration from other artists. We will explore simple foam print making, metal embossing, two-part sessions of creating a miniature imaginary being with a tiny throne, and soulful collage making. Sarah will introduce the media and concept of project, showing a few methods of use, while encouraging individual experimentation.
All materials are provided.
Class schedule:
Sat, Jan 11, 1-4PM: PRINTMAKING WITH FOAM PLATES!
Inspired by Black American artist, James Lesesne Wells (1902-1983), you will have the option of creating your own design to print, or to use Wells’s work as a guide to draw stylized faces into foam print plates to create multiple ink prints. The cost of class includes 1-2 sheets of foam, inks and print paper. If you want to create your own design please bring whatever you need to do so! We may even have time to create 2 different designed prints…
Sat, Jan 18, 1-4 PM: METAL EMBOSSING!
Let’s explore a beautiful Mexican art form of repujado or metal embossing! You can either bring your own design ideas and references or we will use visual references in the studio of landscapes as inspirations. Sarah will explain/show the technique. We will use colored sharpies to bring out the end design and make it glow!
Sats, Jan 25 & Feb 1 - 1-4 PM: IMAGINARY BEINGS &THRONES (A 2-part session) :
Part 1 (of 2) Jan 25: Use your imagination to draw, then create a being out of ‘model magic’ clay (that will be painted and embellished in session 2) that expresses all the attributes you would chose to have if you were a mythical being. Maybe you would want wings so you could explore distant lands on a whim, or a lions mane to inspire awe, or a mermaids tail to explore the depths…
Part 2 (of2) Feb 1: We will paint our beings and use glue guns to attach feathers, sequence, bits of fabric or any found objects to finish your creation. Then we will shift our attention to compressed cardboard throne (bases) to paint or embellish however you wish. You might even have time to create a miniature “backdrop” of the environment your imaginary being resides in.
Sat Feb 8, 1-4 PM: SOULFUL COLLAGE : Hunt and gather materials in the studio (or at home- or both!) to create 2 or 3 demential collages. I offer glue sticks, glue guns and/or acrylic glaze medium to adhere different kinds of papers, magazine images, feathers, natural objects, etc. to cardboard bases to make whimsical, one-of-a-kind creations!
