5 Sundays: DRAWING TOGETHER!
5 Sundays Drawing Together 1-4 PM:
(Drawing Together is best taken as a 5 Saturdays consecutive skill-building experience, but I am opening it this session to the possibility of taking individual classes, if you prefer.)
Drawing Together is open to ALL "levels" of experience in drawing, with special emphasis on cultivating a fun and safe experience for adult beginners, as well as an opportunity for more experienced students to return to “beginner mind” or, as the google dictionary says is “an attitude of openness and eagerness, in which a lack of preconceptions allows a person to see everything as though for the first time.”
The goal at NowThenStudio is for every artist to thrive in this intimate community space with caring, individualized attention. In this way, we will be able to grow into our abilities to see and draw our unique visions. By practicing looking for shapes and how they relate to other shapes, including negative space, we will begin to develop command of composition. Experimenting with gesture, dimension, form and value, we will increase our expressive range and power. We will work from still life arrangements, photographs, other artist’s works, direct observation and/or photographs. Starting with black and white drawing materials we will venture into experimenting with color as well.
All materials are provided; cost is determined in part by materials used.
Sun, Jan 12, 1-4 PM - Abstracting Nature Like O’Keefe!
Using charcoal pencils we closely observe organic objects and choose one area of focus- to bring the micro into macro as Georgia O’Keefe liked to do. In this way of working, flowers and other organic matter becomes abstracted. With these shapes drawn large we can then experiment with darks, lights and everything in between. Time permitting, we may choose to copy one of O’Keeffe’s works. By copying we can learn about the problem-solving of another artist - a very valuable experience!
Sun, Jan 19, 1-4PM - Black and White Portraits- (creating gray scales)!
We will begin by experimenting with various drawing pencils to expand your command of a range in grays. The creation of gray scales, helps us to become conscious of the range value in a what we are seeing and drawing more effectively. Using a variety of grays will give your work a sense of depth, drama and interest. We will use black and white photographs of Black women by Brian Lanker as our inspiration. We will focus on seeing basic shapes, values and various line qualities to create our own visual responses to these photographs!
Sun, Jan 26, 1-4PM: Mixing and Mark Making Techniques with Colored Pencils!
Choose your subject matter from studio visuals (or bring your own). What best expresses your emotional connection to the visual you are working from and what you want to create? Learn how to create a composition that “works”; focus on placement, line quality, texture making and color mixing to create an expressive work of art with value and dimension!
Sun Feb 2, 1-4 PM: Richard Mayhew - Inspired Landscapes!
Using soft pastels, we will experiment with making our own copies of Mayhew’s work. Water-based pastels brings a painterly effect to the drawing- this is a media that demands we let go of precise detail and become familiar with more abstracted qualities. Special emphasis will be on color mixing and theory. While copying other artists work, a lot of problem solving has already been done for us, which frees us to focus on learning one particular aspect of the work which in this case will be color. We may have time to create a second piece of work using what you learned to create your own colorful landscape!
Sun, Feb 9, 1-4PM - Self Portraits with Pencil!
We will learn how to work from general to the specific of shapes, from darkest darks to lightest lights and everywhere in between! Line qualities and texture making will also be part of the process. It can be an emotional experience to draw ourselves, which we can choose to view as a golden opportunity to let go of judgement and self-diminishing tendencies and open to the surprise of what it is to truly see ourselves through a loving and accepting lens- with a sense of humor! (If you have drawn self- portraits with me before you can work from a photograph of a younger version of yourself, or another photograph in your life that inspires you!)
